Easter and Halloween Unite In This Halloween Decoration...

This is my favorite Halloween decoration; I can't wait to put it up every year : )! We saw the idea for this tree in a Martha Stewart magazine the first year we were married, and I convinced Karl that we needed to try it. He can make anything right ; )?

The tree itself is made from a coated wire that we found at Robert's. The wire is just twisted together to form the trunk and branches, and is then attached to a base. We used Bond-O for the attaching ; ). Karl can do some pretty amazing things with Bond-O.

The decorations on the tree are made out of eggs. Crazy, huh? The yolk is blown out, and a design is painted on the egg with wax. The wax is allowed to dry, and the egg is then dipped in egg dye - or spray painted if you want black. After the egg comes out of the dye, it is allowed to dry, and then the wax is melted off with a candle. Ta-da you have a fun little halloween decoration like the spider web shown above!

To get the tri-colored design like the pumpkin on the right, the entire egg is first dipped in a light orange dye. The egg is allowed to dry and the stripes and face are painted on the egg with wax. The egg is then dipped in a dark orange dye and allowed to dry. The wax is then melted off with a candle and the face is filled in with black paint.



To hang the eggs on the tree, an eyelet is gently screwed into the top of each egg, and the egg is attached to the tree with ribbon that is run throught the eyelet. The whole tree is then decorated with a random placement of spanish moss : )!

This is my favorite egg : ). The spider was painted on the dyed egg with shiny, black model paint.



For the owl shown in this picture: The entire egg was first spray-painted yellow. The owl and moon were then painted on the egg with wax, and the egg was spray-painted black. When the wax was melted off - this was the result : ).
